After years of making mistakes while traveling, we want to offer a few tips that will help make your next trip a fun one! Imagine having Celiac twenty years ago with the general public not even knowing what "gluten" was, and doctors as well!
- You can call airlines when making your reservations and request a gluten free meal. United is very on board with this now. If you are highly sensitive to gluten with a low thresh hold to gluten, be aware that airline kitchens are rat races and cross contamination can come into play.
- The better the hotel, the easier your trip will be. We learned this long ago. A 4 star or 5 star hotel will cater to your needs much better than a 1-2 or 3 star. The kitchens are cleaner, the chefs have been trained, the food quality is superior. Spending more for your room will pay off.
- Visiting a restaurant during peak customer traffic hours is a mistake. If a restaurant is jammed, the kitchen is going crazy with orders and general confusion is taking place. The server can only communicate so much to the kitchen when its so busy. Visit a restaurant early or late. Much safer.
- When communicating to a server and explaining how critical it is to get the order right can be a problem. If you sense the server is just shrugging the information off, go to the manager and explain that you just placed the order, and it would be appreciated if they could make sure the order is prepared correctly.
- Speaking to room service with an employee who has a problem with english? Don't waste your time, ask for their supervisor and place the order. Do not feel your offending anyone. A mixed up order could spoil your entire trip. We have been there!
